VHILS

Vhils (b. 1987) developed a unique visual language based on the removal of the surface layers of walls and other supports, using unconventional tools and techniques. Peeling back the layers of our material culture, Vhils reflects on the impact of urbanity, development and global uniformity on landscapes and people's identity, formulating powerful and poetic visual propositions from materials that the city rejects. He has presented his work around the world in exhibitions and events – from working with communities in the favelas in Rio de Janeiro to collaborations with institutions such as the EDP Foundation (Lisbon), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Barbican Centre (London), CAFA Art Museum (Beijing), and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others. Vhils has developed his personal aesthetics in a multitude of media – from stencil painting to metal engraving, from video to sculptural installations. He has also made music videos, short films and a stage production. He works with several renowned galleries, including Vera Cortês (Portugal), Lazarides (United Kingdom), Danysz (France and China), and Over the Influence (Hong Kong and USA). He is represented in a number of public and private collections around the world.
